Imagine mosaic

my new harmonica necklace

My sweet tooth often lures me to the wonderful bakeries, including Buttercup Bake Shop, on the Upper West Side. Not only do the delicious layer cakes serve as a treat, but one of my most beloved destinations in the whole city is a few blocks away: Central Park’s Strawberry Fields.

The Dakota, where John Lennon lived with Yoko Ono and their young sons, sits at 72nd Street and Central Park West. It is a striking building with flame-filled lanterns at the entrance. For me, walking by the building is very calming, as if John Lennon’s presence is still there. Lennon frequently walked in the park with his family, and when he passed away, the area spanning from 71st to 74th Street was designated “Strawberry Fields.” The highlight of that area is a beautiful mosaic featuring the word “Imagine.”

At this time of year, when we’re all thinking about resolutions and goals for 2009, I often look to Lennon’s words and music. His hopes were pure, brave, inspiring, and most importantly, full of good intention.

I have added another musical piece, a harmonica necklace, to the collection. It is certainly inspired by John Lennon, my absolute favorite musician. As his spirit is felt around the 72nd Street area, I also hope I capture a bit of who he was and what he stood for in my jewelry and my life.

Peace, Elisa
