The Challenges of Gift-Giving

Happy Monday!
While perusing Archangel Antiques in the East Village yesterday, a harried young hipster entered the store. “I need a gift for my new boyfriend! Help- he’s a musican, he’s sensitive, he likes lighters….” This panic continued for ten minutes. As a jeweler, I realize gift selection is not an easy task for many individuals, and part of me wanted to walk over to the girl, give her a hug, and say “breathe!”

Though I’m a bit old for teenybopper musicians, I still occassionally like their songs. A Gavin Degraw “hit single” started to play on the radio, and the lyrics were:
“I’m in love with a girl who knows me better, fell for the woman just when i met her, took my sweet time when i was bitter, someone understands, and she knows how to treat a fella right, give me that feeling every night, wants to make love when i wanna fight….”

The girl had a look of terror on her face, and I realized when sentiments such as those in the song are expressed, it can create even more pressure around Valentine’s Day, birthdays, etc. Unfortunately, the girl left the store without a gift. I created a “male” necklace over the weekend, which I plan to add to my website, to hopefully make gift giving a bit easier for Elisa Solomon Jewelry’s female fans.

The design is a slightly rough-looking sterling silver oval with a carving of an arrow. A piece of suede is wrapped through the oval and strung with six ancient beads. It looks great on a man with its slightly rugged quality.
Peace, Elisa
